- most web designers use Apple computers. i design websites and use a Mac Book Pro cost was about $2500 dollars but its definitely worth it for the price.
- It depends what programs youll be running. Like photoshop, illustrator, etc.. I have a p4 1.6ghz long time ago when doin websites it can handle it. If your a graphic designer that does printing then youll prolly need a beefy pc. Are you sure your just going to do sites? and wat programs will you be using?
- In my experience of web design it is not generally very taxing on a computor - or hardware and OS dependant) so almost any computer sold theses days will enable you to design websites. I could design a website on almost any PC in use today and using applications that cost you nothing i.e free to download form the web so that shows you that web design is not an activity that is totally dependant on the above But a professional web designer would want a reasonable set up and applications. However you fail to mention above the hardware items that I consider the most important when designing websites. 1/.A monitor that is high resolution and accurate in colour profile and colour rendering, no flicker i.e high refresh rates and big enough to fit all your applications on the screen at once - when designing a web page I often have Dreamweaver - which has a lot of windows within the application and can be run in dual screen mode, Photoshop, a word processor and sometimes applications such as visual basic net, Macromedia Flash etc. So I need lots of screen room. This can either be one big monitor or as I do two monitors of 17inch up run off of a dual screen capable graphics card. This brings me to the other hardware item you failed to mention which is: 2/. A high end graphics card. This is good to have as you will want to have more than one application open at once and usually in web design you will be processing lots of images. You can of course do this with a low end graphics card but having a high end one makes the whole process quicker and easier and more accurate colour wise. Other Considerations Apples are designed for design work so mostly have the graphics, other basic spec and applications you need i.e Photoshop, Dreamweaver or adobe go live, quark , etc 'built- in' but Apples are more expensive and not user upgradable in the same way and the applications if you have to buy them additionally are more expensive for the Apple. Often if you want to upgrade an Apples hardware you just have to throw it away and buy another one - with a PC you can change components as you need them and maybe once every 3 to 5 years change the motherboard si it is in effect a new machine. I find this more economic as a freelance web designer than running an Apple and replacing the whole machine every few years. Processor speed and Ram are important but less so as you can get away with less in theses areas. Finished HTML files and others files you may create are still relatively small so huge hard disk capacity is not essential fro storage unless you are processing huge amounts of images and graphics or lots of video for web sites. And of course your finished product is stored on a server so you can back up your files in a server space too. Really apart from having a good graphics card and good monitor/s the specification of a PC for web design depends on what you can afford, as of course the faster the processor, the more Ram and everything else you can afford is best As a freelance web designer I use a PC with the software I need Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Macromedia flash, word and I use Premiere for video rendering for the occasional time I need to add video to a site. I have a AMD Athlon64X2 Dual core processor 4600+2.47GHz - there are now much faster dual processors to be had but this is more than adequate for web design and in fact I could get away with a single core much lower spec processor for web design RAM 2000 MB, My OS is now Vista Ultimate, but you can do web design on anything from all Apple OS to windows 98 upwards -even Linux as long as the applications you need run on your OS web design is not OS dependent at all. ( linux has its own Photoshop, web authoring, video and word prrocessing substitue software) I run two PCI express, NVIDA geForce 7900 GT/GTO 256MB GDDR3 Ram each graphic cards, both are dual screen, and SLi capable but two is over the top for web design you just need one good graphics card and while this card is not now anywhere near top end they are more than is needed for web design - as long as it has at least 128 DDRam it would do, but more is best for the graphic card. I have several USB external hard disks - but theses are not necessary for web design I have them because I do photography too so I need them for storage. A DVD writer for storage and back up I do have a graphics tablet but for web design do not find I use it that much I do buy very high quality keyboards and a wireless mouse as you can get repetitive strain injury very easily doing lots of web design so make sure theses are comfortable as is your chair, screen positions and height of desk I built my PC so can not tell you a make - if you build it you get exactly what you want - but I would not tell you an exact make anyway as this would be doing your homework completely for you!!! I have set essays/projects like this one and the point is to explore for yourself what is available, what computer hardware is needed for what and what you need for a certain job and put it all together and use your knowledge to suggest suitable spec machines. I have given you some clues as to what a web designer would need, now go and find machines that meet that criteria – and mention cost verses optimal performance and other considerations I have told you about above
