Why are ergonomic mouses so expensive?

I reckon i'm coming down with RSI from the terrible design of the standard mouse. I looked on ebay and the alternatives are so pricey! I don't want to become crippled both physically and financially!

1. Because you are paying for the research that went into the design of the mouse. A good design cost hundreds of thousands, and possibly millions of dollars to research. Its just like medications, they cost about 10 cents to make a pill, but then charge you 20 bucks, because they cost so much to design in the first place.
2. The cost of making things comes down the more they are able to sell. The less mainstream products will always cost more.
